The Grand Canyon is a bucket list destination for many family travelers. The awesome magnitude of the Grand Canyon, combined with some other family-friendly America West adventures, makes for a great Spring Break family trip. During March and April, the weather in the southwest is generally very comfortable, with temperatures in the 70’s and even getting into the 80’s.
One of our favorite itineraries starts in Phoenix, Arizona and ends in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here are the details of this fun trip!
Begin By Exploring the Red Rocks of Sedona, Arizona
Located just over two hours from Phoenix, Sedona is a charming and fun town to explore. Not only is the small city packed with shops, boutiques and restaurants, but the surrounding area is literally am outdoor playground. There are miles and miles of hiking and mountain bike trails, ancient civilizations explore and a great opportunity to experience the wild-west cowboy culture.
A super special activity to include in Sedona is a hot air ballon ride over the stunning Verde Valley. In the early morning, enjoy a one-hour hot air balloon ride with the red rocks of Sedona surrounding you as you go. At the end of your hot air balloon tour, you’ll land in one of the verdant fields downwind. After your flight, enjoy a light champagne picnic (apple cider for the children).
There are a wide range of accommodation options available in Sedona, but we love the Enchantment Resort (located near Boynton Canyon) and the Amara Resort, located right in town.
Head to the Grand Canyon
The drive from Sedona to the Grand Canyon is only about 2.5 hours. Families can head out with a private guide in the morning for a tour and hike around the Grand Canyon South rim and into the Canyon on trails little-used by other hikers. Your guide will explain the history, geology, flora and fauna of the Canyon.
In the afternoon, head in to one of the historic lodges and buildings on the Canyon rim, including the studio of photography pioneers Emery & Ellsworth Kolb. Enjoy lunch at the historic El Tovar Lodge, located right on the edge of the South Rim.
Finish in Las Vegas
Finally, a fun way to finish this itinerary is to end in Las Vegas! The drive from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas is 4.5 hours. In addition to seeing shows, marveling at the glitzy strip and enjoying the pools, an excellent option for those wanting a break from the Strip is the Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area. Just 17 miles from the heart of Las Vegas on Charleston Blvd/ State Route 59, the area offers more than 30 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, and a nature center, and excellent immersion into the Mojave Desert.
